Transformation of the Normal? 'Doing Family' in Post-Traditional Families in Bavaria
Co-parents challenge the traditional link between family and romantic love by consciously shaping parenthood within a defined division of labor or friendship. What does this mean in concrete terms for everyday family life as well as for the transformation of the family?
(v. l. n. r. P.-I. Villa Braslavsky, M. Resch)

The project uses qualitative methods of empirical social research to explore the inner life of co-parenting families in Bavaria, exploring whether and how the concept of family changes when ideas of family and romantic love are decoupled.

The focus is particularly  on the everyday practices and self-understanding of these hitherto underexplored constellations of ‘doing family’.’ This family form is understood as an expression of social transformation processes which, although they are not (yet) particularly significant in quantitative terms, can provide valuable insights into the future of family forms.

How do co-parents change family?

The aim is to understand how co-parenting families perceive themselves, how they address ‘transformation’, and what needs they articulate to policymakers, particularly regarding housing, urban planning, family, and educational policies as well as family law in Bavaria.

In addition, interview with experts are conducted to investigate how co-parenting families are perceived by family-related organizations such as childcare facilities, schools and youth welfare services.

The research findings provide policy suggestions for future-oriented family policies and family law adequately accommodating post-traditional family forms.
